If you think a drive is failing, do this first

1. Stop using it. Every additional minute of power on a failing drive can turn a recoverable situation into an unrecoverable one.
2. Do not keep restarting it. Repeated power cycles are one of the most common ways people lose data permanently while trying to rescue it.
3. Do not install recovery software onto the same drive. Writing anything to it can overwrite the very files you are trying to save.
4. Tell us the data matters before any work starts. That genuinely changes the approach we take.

Be careful who promises what

Data recovery is never guaranteed, and anyone who guarantees it is not being straight with you. Outcomes depend entirely on what has gone wrong. A drive with logical corruption, a deleted partition or a failing but spinning disk is a very different proposition from one with severe physical damage or a failed controller.

We assess the drive, tell you honestly what we think is realistic, and explain when a specialist cleanroom facility would give you a better chance than we can. If your data is genuinely irreplaceable, we would rather point you to the right option than take your money for a long shot.

Signs a drive is failing

• Files taking far longer to open than they used to
• Repeated startup errors, or disk-check running every boot
• Files that have become inaccessible or corrupt
• Freezes, crashes or the system hanging on simple tasks
• The drive disappearing and reappearing in the system
• Clicking, grinding or beeping from a mechanical hard drive, which is the most urgent sign of all

Upgrades that actually make a difference

Upgrading is frequently the difference between a computer that feels finished and one that has years left. Two changes do most of the work:

Moving from a mechanical hard drive to an SSD. On an older machine this is transformative, and usually more noticeable than any other single upgrade. Boot times, opening programs and general responsiveness all change dramatically.

Adding memory. If your computer slows to a crawl with several browser tabs and a couple of programs open, it is likely short of RAM rather than worn out.

Not every machine is upgradeable, particularly thinner laptops where storage and memory may be soldered. We check what your specific model supports before recommending anything, and we will tell you when an upgrade is not worth the money.

Frequently asked questions

Can you guarantee you will recover my data?

No, and please be sceptical of anyone who says they can. Recovery depends entirely on what has failed and how badly. We assess the drive and give you an honest view of the chances before you spend anything.

My hard drive is making a clicking noise. What should I do?

Turn it off now and do not power it on again. Clicking usually indicates a mechanical fault, and every further attempt to run it risks making the damage worse. This is the most urgent of all the warning signs.

I deleted files by accident. Can they be recovered?

Sometimes, and the odds are much better if you stop using that drive immediately. Deleted files often remain on the disk until something overwrites them, so continued use is what usually destroys them.

Do you collect computers for data work?

Yes. We collect from your home or workplace, and can also visit you or accept the machine by post.

Will an SSD make my old computer faster?

If it currently runs a mechanical hard drive, almost certainly, and usually dramatically. It is typically the most effective single upgrade available for an older machine.

Can you move my files to a new computer?

Yes. We handle data transfer between machines, which is normally the part people find most daunting about replacing a computer.

Can every computer be upgraded?

No. Many thinner laptops have memory and storage soldered to the board. We check your specific model and tell you honestly if an upgrade is not possible or not worth it.

How do I avoid needing data recovery again?

A working backup, which we are happy to help set up. It is far cheaper than any recovery attempt, and unlike recovery it always works.
