Computer Lab HTX
Gaming Laptop Repair Houston
Gaming laptop crashing, throttling or running hot? We can collect it, fix it and bring it back. Gaming laptops are heavy, awkward to transport and expensive to be without. Computer Lab HTX is an independent, appointment-based gaming laptop repair service covering Houston and the surrounding area, and we will come to you rather than making you come to us.
Gaming laptops cram desktop-class heat and power demands into a thin chassis. When one crashes mid-game, throttles to a crawl, shuts down under load or suddenly loses frames, the cause could be cooling, memory, storage, power delivery, graphics or software. We find out which before anyone suggests parts.
Getting it to us without the hassle
- Collection and return. We pick it up and bring it back, tested. Easily the most popular option for a machine this bulky.
- On-site visits. For driver, software, setup and some upgrade work we can come to you.
- Mail-in. Post it in if you are further out.
- Drop-off by appointment. At an agreed time, not a walk-in counter.
Gaming laptop problems we diagnose
- Overheating and thermal throttling. The single most common gaming laptop complaint. Usually dust choking the heatsink, thermal paste that has dried out after a few years, or a fan that has started to fail. Heat is also why so many other symptoms appear.
- Shutting down or restarting during games. Crashes that only happen under load point somewhere different from crashes at idle. That distinction is genuinely useful diagnostic information, so tell us which it is.
- Frame rates dropping or performance falling off a cliff. Often thermal throttling protecting the hardware, sometimes a storage bottleneck, sometimes a driver or background process.
- Fans constantly loud, or not spinning at all. A fan that has stopped is urgent, because the machine will cook itself trying to compensate.
- Will not power on or will not charge. Gaming laptops draw heavily, and their chargers and charging circuits take a beating.
- Display problems and external monitor faults. Including laptops that work on an external screen but not their own panel, which narrows the fault considerably.
- Storage and memory faults. Failing SSDs, unstable RAM, and machines that have simply run out of room.
- Windows, driver and update problems. Not every gaming fault is hardware, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a part.
Brands we assess
ASUS ROG and TUF, Lenovo Legion, Acer Nitro and Predator, Dell G-series and Alienware, HP Omen and Victus, MSI and other Windows gaming laptops. What can be repaired or upgraded depends on the specific model, its condition and parts availability.
Why heat causes most of it
A gaming laptop under load is trying to dump a lot of heat through very little space. Over a couple of years the heatsink fills with dust, the thermal interface degrades, and the machine starts protecting itself by slowing down. That looks to you like a laptop that has got slower, or one that crashes in games it used to run.
A thorough clean, fresh thermal paste and a fan check restore a surprising number of machines that owners had written off. It is worth diagnosing before you replace anything, and it is one of the cheaper interventions we do.
Upgrades worth doing
Many gaming laptops still allow SSD and memory upgrades, which can help with storage pressure, load times and multitasking. Graphics is normally soldered and not upgradeable, so be wary of anyone implying otherwise. We check what your exact model supports before recommending anything.
What it costs
We do not publish fixed prices. The cost depends on the model, what has actually failed, whether parts are available and how much disassembly the design demands, which varies enormously between gaming laptops. You get the diagnosis and a clear estimate first, and no paid work starts without your approval.
How it works
- Tell us the model and symptoms. Crucially, whether the problem happens only under load or at idle too.
- We arrange collection, a visit or a drop-off.
- We diagnose and test. Including under load, because a gaming fault that only appears under load cannot be found any other way.
- You approve the estimate.
- We repair, test and return it.
Serving Houston and the surrounding area

Frequently asked questions
Do you collect and return gaming laptops?
Yes, and for a machine this heavy it is the option most people take. We collect from your home or workplace and return it once the repair is complete and tested.
My gaming laptop shuts off while playing games. What causes that?
Shutdowns under load usually point to heat or power delivery, but memory, storage, graphics and software can all produce the same symptom. It needs testing under load to identify properly, which is exactly what we do.
Why has my gaming laptop got slower over time?
Most often thermal throttling. As dust builds up and thermal paste degrades, the machine protects itself by reducing performance. A clean and repaste restores many laptops that owners assumed were worn out.
Can you upgrade the RAM or SSD?
Usually yes, depending on the model. We check compatibility before recommending anything.
Can you upgrade the graphics card?
Almost never. In nearly all gaming laptops the GPU is soldered to the board and cannot be changed. Be cautious of anyone who tells you otherwise.
Is it worth repairing an older gaming laptop?
Usually, yes. The most common gaming laptop faults are also among the cheapest to put right: dust, dried-out thermal paste, a failing fan or a tired drive. A machine that crashes and throttles can often be brought back to form for a fraction of what a replacement costs.
Do you repair regular laptops too?
Yes. See laptop repair for everyday Windows machines and MacBook repair for Apple laptops.
